Gobi
Base in Dalanzadgad for the South Gobi sights; add 4–5 nights and a driver-guide, or skip the desert this trip.

- East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
- East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
- Mongolia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official government e-visa portal; some nationalities enter visa-free for a limited stay, others need an e-visa.
- Mongolia ↗In a ger: step over the threshold (never on it), move clockwise, receive food and drink with the right hand, and do not point your feet at the stove or the altar.
- Mongolia ↗Plan road trips by hours, not kilometres: paved roads are few, and 100 km of dirt track can take three hours.
The Gobi is not one place: it is a semi-desert the size of a country, with the sights clustered in the South Gobi around Dalanzadgad and a thin line of towns on the paved and rail routes north of it. Almost nothing is walkable and public transport does not reach the dunes, the ice canyon or the cliffs, so the real decision is whether you will pay for a driver-guide for 4–5 days. If yes, fly or bus to Dalanzadgad and loop from there. If no, take Elsen Tasarkhai on the Kharkhorin road instead and keep the Gobi for a longer trip.

- Spring dust storms close schools and roads and can pin you in a ger for a day; tie-downs on gers are normal, not a warning sign.
- Summer sun and shade differ by a huge margin — 30 °C (86 °F)+ in the open can feel cold the moment you step into shade or after sunset.Summer sun and shade differ by a huge margin — 86 °F (30 °C)+ in the open can feel cold the moment you step into shade or after sunset.
- Fuel is expensive and stations are far apart; a jerrycan and a full tank before each leg are standard practice.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yolyn Am (Valley of the Vultures) | Dalanzadgad | 60 min | unknown | Gorge walk in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park; the ice field shrinks through summer — check before you count on it. |
| Khongoryn Els (singing dunes) | Dalanzadgad | 180 min | unknown | Long rough drive; sleep at a camp nearby rather than returning the same day. |
| Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs) | Dalanzadgad | 120 min | unknown | Best light is late afternoon; dinosaur-bone sites are marked and fenced. |
Bags between cities
There is no luggage forwarding in the Gobi. Everything rides in your vehicle; pack soft bags and leave hard cases in Ulaanbaatar.

- South Gobi (Dalanzadgad)
- May–June and September are the sweet spots; July–August is hot and busy with domestic tourists. Winter is genuinely cold, not mild.
- Northern Gobi edge (Bayanhongor, Sainshand)
- Slightly cooler and greener than the south; dust storms peak in spring.
The Gobi is the world's coldest desert: it is dry and a little warmer than the rest of Mongolia, but winter still freezes hard. Travel into September and October is possible.

|---|---|---|
| Camel meat | Gobi guesthouses and camps | Usually served boiled or in dumplings; an acquired taste but the local staple protein. |
| Camel milk (airag-style, fermented) | Gobi herder families | Mildly alcoholic and can upset a stomach; drink small amounts first. |
| Buuz and khuushuur | Dalanzadgad canteens | Steamed or fried mutton dumplings; the reliable cheap meal in every provincial town. |
| Dairy snacks (aaruul, dried curd) | Markets and camps | Hard dried curd travels well in a hot car; buy from the market in Dalanzadgad. |
