Western Mongolia is four provinces — Bayan-Ölgii, Hovd, Uvs and Zavkhan — reached by daily or near-daily flights from Ulaanbaatar, or by 30–36 hour buses. Paved road from the capital ends about 320 km before eastern Zavkhan, so once you are in, you move on shared jeeps or a hired 4WD with a driver-guide. The payoff is Mongolia's highest mountains (Tavan Bogd, 4,374 m), the Great Lakes Depression, Kazakh eagle hunters in Bayan-Ölgii, and petroglyphs and standing stones across the Altai. Budget 7–10 days; a 3-day add-on is mostly transit.

Altai and Bayan-Ölgii: Short summer; July–August are the only reliable trekking months. Early October is Eagle Festival weather — cold, with snow possible.
Great Lakes Depression: Drier and lower than the Altai; Uvs Lake basin is one of the coldest places in Mongolia in winter.
Zavkhan: Khangai side is wetter and greener; July–August for the lakes and dunes.

Best months are also the only months most operators run. Naadam is the first week of July in the provincial capitals; the main Golden Eagle Festival is in Ölgii in early October, with a smaller one on the last weekend of September.
