Gliwice is an industrial Silesian city of about 180,000 people, 30 minutes by train from Katowice and two hours from Wrocław. Its old town was rebuilt and is walkable in half a day; the two things worth a detour are the 118 m wooden radio tower at the 1939 false-flag site and the Palm House. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop inside the Katowice metro area, not a base.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: Rynek to the railway station is about 10–12 minutes on foot. For anything further out, ZTM Metropolia runs the buses and trams across the Upper Silesian metro area on one ticket system; buy tickets from machines or apps. Trains to Katowice run roughly every 20 minutes and take about 30 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Gliwice is a low-risk city for its size; the usual big-city cautions apply around the station and late-night bars. Watch for pickpockets in crowds, keep an eye on your drink, and use 112 for anything urgent.
  • Some museum labelling is Polish-only, including the radio tower exhibition.
  • The old bus station south of the railway station is demolished; buses now use Centrum Przesiadkowe north of the station.
  • Old St Bartholomew Church is seldom open and in poor repair: do not plan around it.
  • Winter days are short and grey; the Palm House and museums are the wet-weather fallback.
