Before you start
Welcome to the St George's Cathedral & Main Street audio walk in Georgetown. 3 stops: St George's Cathedral, Georgetown City Hall and National Museum of Guyana. Morning cluster: the cathedral, Parliament and the old wooden streets; flat and short, but the pavements are broken.
St George's Cathedral and the streets around it (approximate box). Underfoot: paved streets, open drains; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Georgetown is a low, hot, timber-and-iron capital at the mouth of the Demerara River, below sea level and held back from the Atlantic by a seawall.
Before you start: Dress modestly in the cathedral. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. St George's Cathedral
Stop 1 of 3: St George's Cathedral.
A tall white wooden Anglican cathedral from the 1890s: twenty minutes inside, then the streets around it.
St George's Cathedral, an Anglican church consecrated in the 1890s, is the best known and is among the tallest wooden church buildings in the world.
Dress modestly; no photos during services. Quieter on weekday mornings. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Georgetown City Hall. It's about 7 minutes on foot. Route: Walk to City Hall (daylight only). The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Georgetown City Hall
Look for
- From the far pavement, facing the main tower
Stop 2 of 3: Georgetown City Hall. Arrival point: Short taxi ride from the cathedral or Stabroek; on foot only in daylight.
Look at the timber Gothic tower from the pavement in daylight: a ten-minute stop on the way to or from the cathedral, not a place to spend an hour.
For a photo: From the far pavement, facing the main tower, morning, with the sun behind you.
The British took control during the Napoleonic wars and renamed the town Georgetown in 1812, after King George III. That is why today's Georgetown is so mixed, and why the food and festivals cover roti, chow mein, pepperpot and Diwali on the same street. Georgetown itself changed slowly during this period, which is one reason so much of its timber architecture survives.
Do not photograph police, army or government staff at the entrance. Quiet on weekday mornings; the street around it is busier at midday.
Walk:Next, stop 3: National Museum of Guyana. It's about 11 minutes on foot. Route: Walk to the museum (daylight only). The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. National Museum of Guyana
Look for
- Inside, only where photography is allowed
Stop 3 of 3: National Museum of Guyana.
A small indoor stop for Amerindian, natural history and colonial displays: a good midday shelter from heat or rain if it is open, but confirm the day before.
For a photo: Inside, only where photography is allowed, any time.
No photography of exhibits unless a sign or staff say it is allowed. Usually quiet; school groups can fill it on weekday mornings. The collection covers natural history, Amerindian cultures and colonial-era Guyana; it is modest in size, so plan 30 to 60 minutes. Displays and labels vary in condition. It works as an air-conditioned-or-at-least-shaded pause, but check whether there is any cooling before counting on it. Opening hours and entry fees change: confirm locally instead of relying on a printed schedule.
End of the walk
That's the end of the St George's Cathedral & Main Street walk. To carry on, Stabroek Market & the waterfront is about 8 minutes away (taxi west). To carry on, Kingston & the seawall is about 8 minutes away (taxi north).
