  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

The Gateway Cities are the southeastern slice of Los Angeles County — a grid of suburbs and old factory towns between Downtown LA and Orange County. There is no single centre. Long Beach is the only one with a waterfront, a walkable downtown and its own airport; Whittier and Downey have historic cores; Cerritos and Artesia are for food and shopping. Everything else is residential, and you need a car or a long bus ride to move between them.

  • Compton and parts of the cities bordering South and East LA have long-standing gang and street-crime problems; do not walk alone at night, and treat daytime walking with the same caution.
  • Freeway traffic is the real time cost here: a 15 km (9.3 mi) drive can take 45 minutes between 07:00–09:30 and 15:00–19:00.
  • Bus transfers between the municipal agencies (Metro, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines) are not free — each boarding is charged.

Not applicable here — this is a car-and-drive region, not a rail-and-luggage one. If you are moving between Long Beach and Whittier mid-trip, just drive your bags; there is no practical luggage-forwarding service.

Metro day pass

check

Pays if you board three or more times in a day; fares are per boarding, so transfers cost extra without it.

TAP card

buy

Reloadable card for Metro and most municipal buses; contactless bank tap also works on Metro.

Rideshare

check

Often cheaper than a day of parking in Long Beach; compare before you commit to a car.
