  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Brazil ↗US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa (about US$81 — check) applied for online at the official VFS portal before travel; EU and UK citizens do not. Check your passport with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.

Garopaba is a former fishing village on the Santa Catarina coast, south of Florianópolis, where the main draw is a string of surf beaches rather than a town centre. It works as a 2–3 night beach stop inside a Grande Florianópolis trip, and it is small enough to see on foot or by local bus once you are in.

Praia da Silveira

South of the centre; surf-focused, more spread out, needs a car or taxi.

Praia do Rosa (Imbituba)

A separate base about 20 km south, outside Garopaba; upscale pousadas and whale watching.

Watch out

Safety

Garopaba is a small, generally safe beach town; the real risks are rough surf and rip currents, unlit roads at night, and petty theft on busy summer beaches. Keep valuables out of sight and don't swim where locals don't.
  • Sea at Silveira and Ferrugem is rough: strong currents, no lifeguards everywhere, ask locals before swimming.
  • Many pousadas and restaurants close or cut hours in winter (Jun–Aug).
  • Summer (Dec–Mar) and Carnival fill beds: book weeks ahead and expect higher prices.
  • Rip currents and unpatrolled stretches are the main beach risk; alcohol plus surf is a bad mix.
