Gangwon is South Korea's mountain province: 82% of it is upland, the east coast runs along the East Sea, and the northern edge is sealed by the DMZ. It is not a one-base province. The coast (Sokcho, Gangneung, Yangyang) and the mountains (Seoraksan, Pyeongchang, Taebaek) sit 1–3 hours apart by bus or the KTX line built for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Pick one base for 2–3 nights, or split coast and mountains if you have four.

3 nights: Sokcho 2 + Gangneung 1 (KTX back to Seoul)

Seoraksan, Pyeongchang and Taebaek are 1–3 hours apart by road. Coast plus mountains plus DMZ in three days is mostly bus time.
English is limited outside hotels and major sights in the rural counties; have place names written in Korean.

East coast (Sokcho, Gangneung, Yangyang): Milder than the interior; sea fog and rain in July–August, typhoon tail-ends in late summer.
Inland mountains (Pyeongchang, Taebaek, Inje): Coldest in Korea in winter; ski resorts usually run late November to March. Autumn colour peaks in October.

Best months are May–June and September–October. New Year sunrise draws crowds to Jeongdongjin and Gyeongpo Beach; book beds well ahead for that week.
