Major city · Australia
Eucla
Stop one night on the Nullarbor crossing, not a destination: fuel, food, a bed and the Old Telegraph Station dunes, then drive on.
Eucla is the easternmost settlement in Western Australia and one of the smallest: under 50 residents, one roadhouse complex, and the Eyre Highway running through it. It sits roughly halfway between Norseman and Port Augusta, so it exists for road-trippers crossing the Nullarbor. The draw is the buried Old Telegraph Station, the beach below the dunes, and the Bunda Cliffs east of town. Border Village, 12 km east, is the South Australian twin.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car. Eucla is a highway stop with no public transport, no taxi and no town centre to walk. Everything — the telegraph station, the beach, the memorials — is a short drive off the Eyre Highway, mostly on good dirt roads. Fuel up here: petrol runs about 50c/litre above Perth or Adelaide prices, but is cheaper than Nullarbor Roadhouse.

goDoor to door: 1–2 h round trip from Eucla
Drive east on the Eyre Highway towards Nullarbor; several signposted lookouts, plus short dirt roads to the cliff edge

Nullarbor Roadhouse
cautionDoor to door: About 2 h
190 km (118 mi) east on the Eyre Highway118 mi (190 km) east on the Eyre Highway
Fuel is more expensive here than at Eucla. Only worth it as part of the crossing, not as a return trip.

Too far for a comfortable return day. Whale season is roughly May–Oct; check before you commit.
