- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
- Prairies ↗A car is the default; outside the big three cities transit is thin and distances are long.
- Prairies ↗Prices are shown before sales tax; it is added at the till.
- Alberta ↗Alberta has no provincial sales tax; the 5% federal GST still applies.
- Alberta ↗Parks Canada charges a daily per-person fee for Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay and Waterton Lakes; buy the annual Discovery Pass if you are in the parks 7+ days.
- Alberta ↗In mountain parks keep 100 m from bears and 30 m from elk; carry bear spray on trails and know how to use it.
The Edmonton Capital Region is Edmonton plus a ring of small former railway towns 15–45 minutes out. Almost all beds, food and night life are in Edmonton; the towns are where you go for a grain elevator, a lake beach, a bison herd or a golf course. Base in Edmonton and day-trip out; only stay in a town if you have a specific reason (Elk Island at dawn, a Lac Ste. Anne cottage week).

Night sequences
- 2 nights
- Edmonton 2, one half-day out to St. Albert or Fort Saskatchewan
- 3 nights
- Edmonton 3: one full day Elk Island, one day West Edmonton Mall + Royal Alberta Museum, one town half-day
- 5 nights
- Edmonton 5 with a car: Elk Island, Lac Ste. Anne / Wabamun, Devon + Leduc, St. Albert, one city day
- Edmonton's ring towns are low-density and car-oriented; without a car, most of them are a long walk from a bus stop to anything.
- Winter driving on Highway 2 and Highway 16 is the real risk: snow, ice and blowing snow from November to March. Check road reports before leaving the city.
- Elk Island is a national park with free-roaming bison. Stay in your vehicle around bison and keep distance from moose and elk.
