Eastern Uganda runs from the Nile at Jinja to the Mount Elgon highlands above Mbale, with the Kenya border towns of Tororo and Busia in between. Jinja is the activity base — rafting, kayaking, source-of-the-Nile walks — and Mbale is the base for Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon hikes. Two bases cover the region's highlights; the rest is transit and farmland. Roads from Kampala to Jinja are paved and fast; beyond Mbale they degrade, so plan daylight drives.
