Whitianga sits in the middle of Mercury Bay on the east side of the Coromandel Peninsula, about 2.5–3 h by road from Auckland (check). It is the peninsula's second-largest town and its main harbour, which makes it the launch point for the 2-hour scenic cruises to Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve and Cathedral Cove. The town itself is small: Buffalo Beach, a handful of cafés and restaurants, a ferry across the harbour to Cooks Beach. Most travellers use it as a 1–2 night base between Thames and Hahei, or as a quieter alternative to the busier west-coast peninsula towns.

Getting around

The town is walkable: wharf, Esplanade, Buffalo Beach and the shops are all within about 15 minutes on foot. A passenger ferry crosses the harbour between the Whitianga wharf and Ferry Landing (adult $4 one way, $6 return; child under 15 $2) — the every-10-minutes schedule and fares are check. Scooters can be hired at Ferry Landing with a car licence. A car is needed for Hahei, Hot Water Beach, Kūaotunu and the wider peninsula.

Safety

Whitianga is a small, low-crime beach town and safe for tourists; the real risks are the sea (cold water, rips on exposed beaches), winding peninsula roads, and weather-dependent boat trips.
  • One-lane bridges and winding peninsula roads: allow more time than the distance suggests.
  • Cruises to Cathedral Cove are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice; book a morning slot and keep a spare day.
  • Hot Water Beach is only usable around low tide — check the tide table before driving over.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on parts of the peninsula; download offline maps.
  • Summer (late Dec–early Feb) fills motels and campsites; book ahead.
