Eastern New England is the high-country half of the New England region: the Armidale, Glen Innes and Tenterfield council areas along the New England Highway (A15), plus the gorge and rainforest parks west of the coast. Towns sit 45–90 minutes apart on one highway, so one base and day loops beat changing motels nightly. Sleep in Armidale for services, the art museum and the university-town food; in Glen Innes for the highway midpoint and the national parks; in Tenterfield for the Queensland border and Bald Rock.

Tablelands (Armidale, Glen Innes, Tenterfield): Frosts from May to August and occasional snow on the higher country; summer days are mild compared with the coast but storms are common. Rain falls year-round, heaviest in summer.
Gorge and rainforest parks: Same seasons as the tablelands; waterfalls run strongest after summer rain, and fire danger peaks December to February.

Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) give the most reliable walking weather; winter mornings on the tablelands can be below freezing.
