Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
- Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
- Norway ↗Norway is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources.
- Norway ↗Wine and spirits are sold only at the state Vinmonopolet shops; supermarkets sell beer, and not in the evenings or on Sundays.
- Norway ↗The right to roam (allemannsretten) lets you hike and camp on most uncultivated land, keeping a distance from homes and leaving no trace.
East Norway is where most trips to Norway begin: Oslo and its airport are the hub, and long valleys run north and west from the city into the highlands. The lowlands around Oslofjord and lake Mjøsa are gentle and quick by train; the mountains at the far end of the valleys are a separate trip, not a detour. Sleep in Oslo unless you are heading for a specific mountain area.

Night sequences
- 3 nights
- Oslo 3, Oslofjord and Mjøsa as day-trips
- 5 nights
- Oslo 3 + Lillehammer 2 (rail, no car needed)
- Oslo, the fjord shore and the highlands are three different climates in one region: the interior valleys are dry and cold in winter, the coast milder and wetter in autumn.
- Mountain roads over the watershed can close or need convoy driving in winter; check the route before setting out.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drøbak and the Oslofjord islands | Oslo | 60 min | unknown | Ferries to the inner-fjord islands run in summer; the outer shore is the sunniest part of the region. |
| Lillehammer | Oslo | 130 min | unknown | Rail along lake Mjøsa; a full day, or stay a night and continue north. |
| Rondane National Park | Oslo | 240 min | unknown | Car is the practical option; the rail corridor leaves a long transfer at the end. |
Bags between cities
Luggage forwarding between Oslo hotels and mountain lodges is possible but slow; plan a day of slack if you use it.

Rental car
checkOnly worth it for the highlands and the valleys; Oslo, the fjord shore and Mjøsa are covered by rail and bus.
