East Estonia is Ida-Viru county: the Narva river border, a Soviet-industrial coast, and the dune shore of Lake Peipsi. It is not a pretty-manor region like the rest of Estonia — it is a place to look at 20th-century industry, castles and a border city, and it rewards two nights rather than a rushed day-trip from Tallinn. Buses run roughly hourly from Tallinn to Narva; trains run about twice a day. Sleep in Narva for the castle and the border, in Jõhvi or Kohtla-Järve for the coast and the shale country, or at Lake Peipsi for the beaches.
