Durham is Toronto's eastern suburban belt plus a rural north. The southern towns sit on the GO Lakeshore East train line, so you can sleep here and reach downtown Toronto in about 40–60 minutes without driving. The interesting half for visitors is the north: Uxbridge trails and the Leaskdale farm where Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote, and the lakes of Scugog. Pick a base by what you came for — Oshawa for museums and the car history, Whitby for the fastest train and most beds, Uxbridge or Port Perry if you want the countryside.
