Layover in Dubai: what to do

Yes, if you are allowed to enter the UAE. Leaving the airport means passing through immigration, so you need either visa-free entry on your passport or a visa arranged in advance. If you are only transiting airside, you stay in the terminal.

The practical limit is your connection, not a fixed number of hours. Immigration queues at Dubai International can take 20–60 minutes at peak periods (check), and you must be back at the terminal before your airline's check-in cut-off. Treat 2–3 hours of your layover as unusable (check).

If your bags are checked through to the final destination, you can still leave with hand luggage only. If you must collect and re-check bags, add another hour.

Rules depend on your nationality, not on where you are flying. Citizens of many countries — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland — normally receive a visa on arrival for tourism, so a layover needs no separate transit visa. Other nationalities must apply for a transit visa before travel, usually through the airline or a UAE-approved sponsor.

The UAE offers short transit visas for eligible travellers, typically arranged before departure. Fees, eligibility, visa length and whether you can apply at the airport change; confirm with your airline and the UAE government before you fly.

Two extra checks matter: passport validity (many airlines want 6 months beyond arrival) and whether your ticket allows a stopover rather than a pure transit.

Dubai International has left-luggage and baggage-storage counters in the terminals, charged per bag per day. Rates are not published as a fixed figure here — check at the counter or on the airport site before you rely on it.

If your airline checks bags through to the final destination, you cannot access them during the layover. Pack a small carry-on with what you need for the city: light clothing, a refillable bottle and a charger.

Some airport hotels and lounges will hold bags for guests; a paid lounge pass can be cheaper than storage plus a meal if you plan to stay airside.

The Metro Red Line connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 to Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown and the Marina. Fares are zone-based, roughly AED 3–8.50 with a silver Nol card, and the trip to the centre takes about 15–40 minutes depending on your stop. Metro hours are roughly 05:00–24:00, later on Fridays — check the day you travel.

Taxis and ride-hailing (Careem, Uber, RTA taxis) are metered and cost about AED 25–60 across central Dubai, more with airport surcharges. Traffic peaks at 07:30–09:30 and 17:00–20:00; build that into your return time.

For the return, be at the airport before your airline's check-in cut-off — confirm the exact time with your carrier. Metro is the most predictable option when roads are busy; a taxi is faster outside peak hours.

The hours below are total layover durations, not sightseeing time. Subtract immigration, transfers and your airport return first; what is left is your real window. Six hours total rarely leaves enough to justify leaving; twelve hours total can work for one area; twenty-four hours total is a proper day.

Heat decides the shape of your day from May to September. Do outdoor sights before 10:00 or after 17:00, and spend the middle of the day in malls, museums or the metro. From November to March you can walk comfortably most of the day.

Friday midday closes some small shops and souks roughly 12:00–14:00. During Ramadan, daytime hours shorten and eating in public during daylight is restricted.
