How to get to Dominica: airports, flights and border crossings

Dominica has two airports. Douglas-Charles (DOM) on the north-east coast handles the larger aircraft and most international arrivals; it is roughly an hour's drive from Roseau and much closer to Portsmouth and Marigot. Canefield (DCF), a small strip in the Roseau valley, takes light aircraft and some regional hops, and is the quicker landing if the south is your base.

There are no nonstop flights from the US mainland, Canada or Europe. Almost everyone connects through a Caribbean hub such as San Juan, Antigua, Barbados, St Maarten or Guadeloupe, then takes a short regional hop. That means a long travel day from North America and a full day or more from Europe, Australia or New Zealand. Build in a buffer: a missed connection in the islands can cost a night.

Fares swing with season and how early you book. Treat any figure you see as a 2026 estimate and check live prices, because the regional legs are often the expensive part.

There is no land border: Dominica is an island, so you arrive by air or by water. Ferries and catamarans link Dominica with Guadeloupe, Martinique and St Lucia, which suits island-hoppers and anyone already in the French Antilles. Schedules are seasonal and can change at short notice, so check before you plan around one.

Cruise ships call at Roseau and at Cabrits near Portsmouth. If you arrive on a cruise, your time ashore is short and the south-coast sights are the realistic target.

Private yachts clear in at Roseau and Portsmouth. If you sail in, expect the same passport and onward-ticket checks as at the airport.

Carry a passport valid on arrival and be ready to show an onward or return ticket and proof of where you are staying; this is standard across the Eastern Caribbean and is usually asked for. Rules differ by passport, so check the current requirements for your nationality before you fly.

From the airport, taxis and pre-booked transfers are the normal way to reach your base; there is no train and buses are local. Roads are steep and winding, and driving is on the left with a local permit, so many visitors let someone else drive on arrival day.

Two small things save trouble: buy an eSIM or local SIM before you rely on maps, and check that your travel insurance covers the activities you plan, since hiking and water sports are the point of a Dominica trip.
