Best time to visit Dominica: weather and seasons by month

Dominica's driest spell runs February to April, and that is when the big hikes, diving and whale trips line up best. The table below gives the verdict, crowd and price level for each month, plus the one thing that changes your plan.

Dominica has two useful weather zones rather than one. The leeward west coast, from Roseau through Soufrière and Mero to Portsmouth, is drier and hotter, with a calm sea that suits diving and whale watching. The interior and east, including Laudat, the Boiling Lake trail and the Kalinago Territory, is rainforest: rain on most days, several metres a year, and cooler air at altitude.

That split decides your itinerary more than the month does. In February to April both zones are at their best, so it is the one window where you can plan a big mountain hike and a boat day in the same trip without gambling. In the wetter months the west coast still gives you usable mornings while the interior trails turn to mud.

May to September is low season, so rooms and tours cost less and trails are quieter. The trade-off is rain, mud and, from June, hurricane risk. October and November are medium-priced, with the World Creole Music Festival pushing late October to the year's highest demand. December to April is the busier, pricier half; February to April is the sweet spot where good weather and mid-level prices overlap.

A few dates override the season. Carnival (Mas Domnik) falls on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, so late February or early March depending on the year, and fills Roseau. The World Creole Music Festival runs three nights in late October and pushes flights and rooms to their highest levels of the year. Creole Day is the last Friday of October, and Independence Day is 3 November. Christmas and Boxing Day bring closures. Book accommodation and inter-island flights early for any of these.

Hurricane season runs June to November, with September the peak month; Hurricane Maria struck on 18 September 2017 and Erika caused flooding in 2015, and both still shape today's roads and trails. If you travel in that window, keep plans flexible, watch forecasts and check trail conditions locally before setting out.

Rainfall matters more than temperature for what you actually do. The Boiling Lake hike is long, exposed and best on a dry day, so aim for February to April or take a guided trip with an early start. Whale watching starts in January and the calmest west-coast seas for diving and boats come February to April, so treat January as a shoulder month and February to April as the stronger window.

Pack for wet ground year-round: grippy shoes, a light rain shell and dry bags. Trails in the interior stay muddy for days after rain even in the dry season.

If your dates are fixed, work backwards from the month table: February to April for hiking and boats, December for a quieter version of the same trip on the west coast, May if you want lower prices and can accept afternoon showers. Avoid September unless you have no choice, and treat June to August and October to November as flexible-plan months.

If your dates are open, aim for March: it is the driest month and the safest bet for the Boiling Lake. Pair it with a few nights near Roseau for the valley hikes and hot springs, then move north to Portsmouth for rivers and calmer days.
