A weekend in Delhi: 2-day itinerary
Two days in Delhi works if you split it: Saturday for Old Delhi and the Red Fort area, Sunday for New Delhi's monuments and a museum. Stay near Connaught Place or Aerocity for easy metro and airport access. If you want Agra too, add a day — a weekend alone cannot cover both.

Top picks
Delhi rewards a short, tight list rather than a long one. Two days is enough for the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar and India Gate in New Delhi, and one museum or market. Anything more and you spend the weekend in traffic.
Book the Red Fort and any monument tickets online the day before; queues at the gate are longer than the visit itself. Start early — most sites open around sunrise and the light and air are better before 10am.
| Pick | Why | Time needed | Cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Fort, Old Delhi | Mughal core, walk to Chandni Chowk | 2–3 hours | Ticket varies by nationality (check) |
| Humayun's Tomb | Garden tomb, quieter than the fort | 1–2 hours | Ticket varies by nationality (check) |
| Qutub Minar | Tallest brick minaret, south Delhi | 1–2 hours | Ticket varies by nationality (check) |
| India Gate and Rajpath | Free walk, evening lights | 1 hour | Free |
| Chandni Chowk food walk | Street food and spice market | 2–3 hours | From about ₹1,500 per person (check) |
| Dilli Haat | Crafts and regional food stalls | 2 hours | Small entry fee (check) |
Prices and hours
Monument tickets in India are usually split into an Indian-national rate and a higher foreign-visitor rate, and the foreign rate often includes a camera fee. Prices change; confirm at the ticket window or the official booking site before you go. Many Delhi monuments close on Mondays, so plan Old Delhi for Saturday and New Delhi for Sunday, or the reverse.
Metro fares are distance-based and cheap — a single journey across the city is usually under ₹60 (check). A day of app cabs across several sites costs more and takes longer in traffic. Keep small notes for autorickshaws and stalls.
| Item | Typical cost (2026 estimate) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Metro single journey | ₹10–60 | Smart card or QR ticket (check) |
| App cab across central Delhi | ₹200–500 | Surge at peak hours (check) |
| Autorickshaw short hop | ₹100–200 | Agree the fare or use the meter (check) |
| Monument entry, foreign rate | Varies by site | Often includes camera fee (check) |
| Lunch at a mid-range restaurant | ₹400–900 | Connaught Place and Hauz Khas (check) |
| Street food snack | ₹50–200 | Chandni Chowk, busy stalls (check) |
Getting there
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the main gateway, with Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Terminal 3 handles most international arrivals. The Airport Express metro links the airport to New Delhi station and Connaught Place in roughly 20–30 minutes (check); app cabs take longer in traffic.
If you arrive by train, New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin are the stations most travellers use. Book trains early — popular routes sell out days ahead. From the airport or station, the metro avoids the worst of the road traffic, especially on a Friday evening or Sunday night.
- Airport Express: airport to New Delhi station, about 20–30 minutes (check)
- Metro: buy a smart card or use a QR ticket at the gate
- App cabs: pick-up zones are marked at each terminal
- Trains: book on the official Indian Railways site well ahead
FAQ
Questions people ask
How do I spend a weekend in Delhi?
Saturday for Old Delhi — Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid — and Sunday for New Delhi: Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate and one market or museum. Start early both days and use the metro between clusters.
Where should I stay for a weekend in Delhi?
Connaught Place puts you between Old and New Delhi with metro access. Aerocity suits a short airport-focused trip. South Delhi around Hauz Khas is quieter and good for restaurants.
Is a weekend enough for Delhi?
Yes for the main monuments and one market. It is not enough for Delhi plus Agra — that needs a third day, or a very early train and a long day.
