Top picks
Delhi rewards a guide most in two places: the lanes of Old Delhi, where a local fixes the route, the rickshaw and the food stops, and the monument circuit, where a guide turns a field of tombs into a story. Everything else you can do yourself with a metro card.
For a first visit, pick one walking tour and one food tour, on different days. Add a car-and-guide day trip only if you have a spare day beyond your Delhi nights — Agra deserves its own night, but a long day trip works if time is short.
Private car with driver and guide is the standard format for monument days: you set the pace, the car waits, and you skip the parking and haggling. Group coach tours are cheaper but lose an hour or two to pickups and a shopping stop.
- Book the walking tour for your first morning: streets are calmer and the light is better.
- Take the food walk on an evening when you have not eaten lunch heavily.
- Ask the operator in writing whether monument tickets are included — many are not.
- Carry small rupee notes for tips, rickshaws and snacks.

Map
Most tours start from a metro station or a hotel lobby, so you rarely need to find an address. Old Delhi walks meet near Chandni Chowk or Jama Masjid metro; New Delhi tours near Rajiv Chowk or Central Secretariat; Agra trips collect from hotels across the city, usually between 6am and 8am.
Distances inside Delhi are short on the map and long in traffic: 15 km can take 60–90 minutes in the morning or evening peak. Build that into any plan that chains two tours in one day.
Coordinates below are approximate city-centre points for orientation.
| Start point | Used for | Metro | Approx. at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandni Chowk | Old Delhi walks, food tours | Chandni Chowk (Yellow) | [28.6570, 77.2300] |
| Jama Masjid | Old Delhi walks | Jama Masjid (Violet) | [28.6507, 77.2334] |
| Rajiv Chowk / Connaught Place | New Delhi tours, hotel pickups | Rajiv Chowk (Blue, Yellow) | [28.6328, 77.2197] |
| Central Secretariat | Monument half-days | Central Secretariat (Yellow, Violet) | [28.6150, 77.2120] |
| Hazrat Nizamuddin | Humayun's Tomb area tours | JLN Stadium then auto | [28.5915, 77.2500] |
| New Delhi Railway Station | Agra train departures | New Delhi (Yellow, Airport) | [28.6420, 77.2190] |
Points are approximate; confirm the exact meeting spot with the operator the day before.
Tips
Check the operator, not the platform. A licensed guide in India carries a Ministry of Tourism ID card; ask to see it, and prefer companies that name their guides on the booking. Community-run walks, such as the slum tours run by local NGOs, put the fee back into the neighbourhood.
Read what is excluded. Most walking tours exclude monument entry tickets, food and transport; food walks usually include tastings but not drinks. A cheap headline price with three exclusions often costs more than a private car.
Book ahead in the high season. October to March is peak, and weekend slots for food walks and Agra trips fill several days out. Weekday mornings are easier. During the monsoon (Jul–Sep) outdoor walks get cancelled or moved; ask about the rain policy.
Dress and behave for the sites. Shoulders and knees covered at Jama Masjid and other religious sites, shoes off inside, and no photography of worshippers without asking. Fridays are busy at the mosque.
Health and heat: carry water, start early in April–June when temperatures climb, and keep the food walk as your main meal rather than a snack before dinner.
- Ask for the guide's licence card before the tour starts.
- Confirm in writing: tickets, meals, car, and the cancellation policy.
- Pay by card or app where possible; keep cash for tips.
- Agree the tip expectation for drivers and guides up front on private tours.
- Save the operator's phone number and the car plate before you set off.
How to book
Book walking and food tours through the operator's own site or a major booking platform, and check that the meeting point is a metro station you can reach. For private car days, ask for the driver's name and plate the evening before.
For Agra, decide train or car first. The Gatimaan and Vande Bharat expresses run the route in about 100 minutes from New Delhi station; a car takes 3–4 hours each way but lets you add Fatehpur Sikri. Either way, book the Taj Mahal entry slot online in advance and note that the monument is closed to tourists on Fridays.
Payment: most operators take cards and UPI, some ask for a deposit by bank transfer. Get a written confirmation with the date, time, meeting point and inclusions. If a 'free' tour asks for a large cash tip at the end or detours to a shop, that is the business model, not a tour.
| Booking route | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Operator's own website | Specialist walks, community tours | Fewer reviews to check |
| Major booking platform | Food walks, day trips, easy refunds | Meeting point may be a hotel, not a metro |
| Hotel concierge | Private car and guide, last minute | Marked-up price, limited choice |
| Station or street touts | Nothing | No licence, no insurance, inflated price |
Prices and inclusions change; treat all figures as 2026 estimates (check).
FAQ
The questions travellers ask most about tours in Delhi, answered in short.
Questions people ask
What are the best tours in Delhi?
An Old Delhi walking tour and a Chandni Chowk food walk cover the city's strongest ground. Add a New Delhi monument half-day with a car and guide, and an Agra day trip if you have a spare day. Prices run about ₹800–3,500 per person for walks (2026 estimate).
Are guided tours worth it in Delhi?
Yes for Old Delhi's lanes and for monument history, where a guide saves time and explains what you are looking at. Skip them for the metro-accessible modern city, which you can walk yourself. A licensed guide carries a Ministry of Tourism ID card.
Which tours should I book in advance in Delhi?
Book Agra day trips, Taj Mahal entry slots and weekend food walks several days ahead in October–March. Weekday morning walking tours can often be booked a day or two out. Confirm the meeting point and inclusions in writing before paying.
