Best areas to stay in Delhi by traveller type

Delhi is a spread-out city of distinct districts, not one centre, so the right base depends on what you plan to do. Most first trips run Old Delhi, New Delhi and a day trip to Agra, which points to the corridor between New Delhi railway station and Connaught Place. Treat the area notes below as a starting shortlist and check recent reviews before you book.

Paharganj sits across from New Delhi station: cheap rooms, hostels, travel desks and a dense strip of cafés on Main Bazaar. It is noisy and pushy, and the lanes are best avoided late at night. Access to the Airport Express and Metro from here is often described as walkable, but the exact station entrances and walking route vary — check a map or ask your hotel before relying on it.

Connaught Place (CP) is the polished version of the same location: offices, banks, restaurants, Janpath shopping and Rajiv Chowk Metro, where the Yellow and Blue lines cross. Rooms cost more and you trade street character for convenience.

South Delhi — Hauz Khas, Saket, Greater Kailash, Defence Colony — is greener and calmer, with malls, hospitals and good restaurants. It suits families, couples and longer stays, but you will rely on the Metro or cabs to reach the monuments.

Karol Bagh is a mid-market shopping district with solid hotels and its own Metro stop. Aerocity and Mahipalpur are airport-side hotel clusters, useful for a late arrival or an early flight and little else.

Hotel rates in Delhi swing hard with season. October to March is generally peak, when the weather is best and prices are highest; April to June is hot, and the monsoon months of July to September bring lower rates and heavy rain. Big trade fairs and the Republic Day period in late January can push rates up sharply in central districts. All of this is a pattern to check against live prices, not a fixed rule.

The Metro runs from early morning until late evening, with trains every few minutes on the main lines; the Airport Express runs a similar span with a longer gap overnight. Exact first and last train times and fares change — check the operator's site or app on the day. Fares are distance-based and cheap. Keep small notes for auto-rickshaws, and agree the fare or insist on the meter before you get in.

Most monuments and museums open in the morning and close in the late afternoon, and many are shut on one day of the week — often Monday — so check the day before you go. Old Delhi's markets are liveliest in the morning and close on Sundays in parts of Chandni Chowk.

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is the main gateway, with terminals for domestic and international flights. The Airport Express train connects the airport with New Delhi station and the city centre; it is often the fastest option when traffic is heavy, but check current timings and fares before you rely on it.

Prepaid taxi counters inside the arrivals hall and app-based cabs are the options most travellers use to reach a hotel; both are widely reported as workable, but service and pricing vary, so check before you commit. Treat anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a taxi or a hotel with caution — unsolicited offers at Indian airports are a known tout pattern (check). If you arrive late, an airport-side hotel in Aerocity or Mahipalpur removes the need for a night drive across the city.

New Delhi railway station is the hub for trains to Agra and beyond, and it is close to Paharganj and a short Metro ride from Connaught Place. Book long-distance trains as early as your dates are fixed, since popular services sell out.

Pick your base by your first and last movements, not by the middle of the trip. If you arrive and leave by train, stay near New Delhi station; if you fly out early, spend the last night airport-side.

Book the first two nights before you land and decide the rest once you have seen the areas. A hotel that looks central on a map can be a long crawl in traffic at 6pm.

Expect noise, air pollution and persistent offers of help from touts in the tourist districts. Use app cabs or prepaid taxis, keep bags zipped in crowds, and treat unsolicited guides as a sales pitch. Women travelling alone often prefer CP or South Delhi for a calmer evening walk (check).
