The itineraries in detail
Day 1 — downtown. Start at Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum, then walk the West End and the Arts District. In the afternoon take the free trolley or a short rideshare to the Dallas Museum of Art and Klyde Warren Park, which sits on a deck over the freeway and is the easiest place to eat from a food truck.
Day 2 — pick one neighbourhood and stay in it. Deep Ellum for murals, music venues and barbecue; Bishop Arts for small shops and restaurants; Uptown for the Katy Trail and a walkable dinner. Do not try to combine all three; the distances are short on a map and long in traffic.
Day 3 — choose one: the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the George W. Bush Presidential Center, or a half-day trip out of the city. If you add a fourth day, use it for Fort Worth, about an hour west by car or train.
Timing notes. Museums mostly open mid-morning and close late afternoon; the Sixth Floor Museum is the one to book ahead. Weekday mornings are quieter at Dealey Plaza. In summer, put outdoor blocks before 11am and after 6pm.
