Where to stay in Cuba: best areas and types of hotel

Stay in Havana for the first 4 nights, split between Habana Vieja (walkable old town, music, museums) and Vedado (wider streets, more restaurants, easier parking). Then move to Viñales for 2 nights in a casa particular in the valley, and Trinidad for 3 nights inside the colonial centre. Cienfuegos, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa are add-ons, not first bases.

The type of accommodation matters as much as the area. Casas particulares (licensed private rooms) are usually the best value and the most reliable when hotels run short of power, water or staff. State and international hotels give you a pool, a bar and a generator, at two to five times the price.

Havana is the only reliable gateway and where most trips start. Habana Vieja puts you inside the old town: plazas, museums, cafés and live music within a 15-minute walk. It is the most atmospheric and the noisiest, and street-level rooms can be loud until late. Vedado is 10–15 minutes west by taxi, with broader avenues, more everyday restaurants and a slightly easier feel. Miramar, further west, is quieter and more residential, good if you want space and a garden, less good if you plan to walk everywhere.

Viñales is a village in a tobacco valley about 2–3 hours by road from Havana. Stay in a casa in or just outside the centre so you can walk to the main street; the valley views are a short walk or bike ride away. Trinidad is a small colonial town, and the best casas sit inside the historic centre within a few blocks of Plaza Mayor. Rooms on the edge of town are cheaper but you will walk 15–20 minutes to the centre, more in the heat.

Cienfuegos works as one night on the road between Havana and Trinidad, with a compact centre and a waterfront. Santiago de Cuba, in the east, needs a flight or a long bus ride and rewards 2–3 nights with music and history. Baracoa is the most remote of the common stops, reached by road or a domestic flight, and is worth 2–3 nights if you have the time. For a first trip, keep it to Havana, Viñales and Trinidad.

Casas particulares are licensed private homes renting one or more rooms, usually with a private bathroom, air conditioning and breakfast for a few dollars extra. They are the standard choice for independent travellers: cheaper than hotels, often better maintained, and the owner can arrange taxis, guides and the next night's casa. Expect to pay in cash, in euros or US dollars, and to agree the price before you unpack.

Hotels range from state-run city hotels to international-brand properties in Havana and beach resorts at Varadero and the keys. They offer pools, bars, generators and sometimes all-inclusive packages, but service and supplies vary, and a hotel that looks fine in photos can be short of water or food. Beach resorts are a different trip: you stay on the sand and travel in for the city, which suits some travellers and bores others.

Hostels exist in Havana and Trinidad but are limited. Private rooms in casas already cover the budget end, so most travellers skip dormitories. Rental apartments, booked through international platforms or directly, work well for families and longer stays in Havana.

Book 4–8 weeks ahead for November to April, the dry high season, and earlier for Christmas, New Year and Easter weeks. Havana hotels and the best casas in Trinidad fill first. If you are travelling in a group or need a specific hotel, start two to three months out. In low season, summer, you can often book a week or two ahead, but heat, rain and hurricanes make that a gamble.

Payment is the practical problem. Cards issued by US banks generally do not work in Cuba, and even non-US cards fail at times, so bring enough cash for accommodation, transport and food. Euros are widely accepted and often preferred over US dollars; check the current exchange situation when you arrive. Some casas and hotels accept international cards, but do not rely on it. Keep a printed list of your bookings and addresses, because phone data is unreliable.

For casas, direct contact by email or messaging app is common, and a small deposit may be requested. Confirm the exact address, the price per night, whether breakfast is included, and whether there is a generator or water tank. If a place cannot answer those questions, that is your answer.

Power cuts are frequent and can last hours. A room with a generator or an inverter keeps the fan and fridge running; a room with a water tank keeps the shower working. Ask before booking, and treat a confident yes as a good sign about the owner.

Safety is normal urban caution: petty theft and scams exist, especially around busy areas at night, and you should use licensed taxis rather than unmarked cars. Casas are generally secure and the owner is a useful point of contact. Travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation is worth arranging before you go, since hospitals may lack supplies.

Check the current government advice for your country before booking anything non-refundable. In September 2026 the UK advises against all but essential travel, Canada advises against non-essential travel and Australia says to reconsider your need to travel, while the US rates Cuba Level 2. That advice can change quickly, and it affects insurance validity as well as your plans. Americans also need a legal OFAC travel category, since tourism is not one.
