Cuba in October: what to expect

October is the tail of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs to 30 November, and it is statistically one of the two busiest months for storms in the Caribbean. The parent country data rates the whole island as storm in October, in all three climate zones. Expect heavy, short downpours rather than all-day drizzle: mornings are often usable, storms build in the afternoon, and humidity stays high.

Temperatures are warm but not extreme: roughly 28–31 °C by day and 22–25 °C at night (2026 estimate). The bigger issue is what happens when the power goes. In 2026 blackouts and fuel shortages matter more than the weather, and a hot, humid night without a fan or air conditioning is the thing travellers actually complain about.

The east is the exception to any optimism. Oriente — Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa, Holguín — took the worst of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, and recovery there is slower than in Havana. Baracoa is wet for much of the year anyway.

October is low season. Crowd index 2/5 and price index 2/5: hotel and casa particular rooms are easy to find and cheaper than in the November–April dry season, and you will not queue at the main sights in Havana or Trinidad. That is the one genuine advantage of the month.

The catch is supply, not demand. Flights in and out are thinner than in high season and cancellations are common, so a cheap room is worth little if you cannot reach it or leave on schedule. Fuel shortages also affect intercity transport, which makes a tight itinerary risky. Build in two buffer days and keep enough cash for a rebooked flight or an extra night.

The month's fixed date is 10 October, Independence Day, marking the start of the 1868 war. It is a public holiday with low impact on travellers: some offices and shops close, but there is no large festival to plan around.

Beyond that, October is thin on scheduled events. Havana's big cultural dates sit elsewhere in the year — the Book Fair in February and the Film Festival in December. Santiago's carnival is in July. If you are hoping for a specific festival, October is not the month to build a trip on.

If you go, stay west and keep the trip short. Havana is the most resilient base: more accommodation, more indoor options, and easier access to the airport if a flight moves. A four-night Havana stay with a couple of museum, music and food days is the lowest-risk plan.

Trinidad is the best second stop — colonial streets, casa particulares and a compact centre you can cover on foot between showers. Cienfuegos and Santa Clara work as short add-ons on the same central route. Treat Viñales as weather-dependent: the valley is outdoor country and rain closes the walking and climbing you came for.

Skip or postpone Oriente. Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa are the furthest from Havana, the hardest to reach when fuel is short, and the region hit hardest by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. If you already have bookings there, confirm road and power conditions before you fly.

Pack for heat, humidity and rain in one bag, and assume you may not have power. Quick-dry clothing beats cotton, and a light rain shell is more useful than an umbrella in wind. Bring a head torch or small lantern, a power bank, and any medication you need in original packaging with a copy of the prescription.

Cash is the practical priority. US-issued cards do not work in Cuba and other foreign cards are unreliable, so carry enough for the whole trip in euros or another accepted currency, plus a hidden backup. September is worse or equal: hurricane peak, low crowds, low prices. November is the first month the site rates ok rather than storm — the dry season returns, crowds and prices climb to medium, and Havana's founding day falls on 16 November. December is dry and busy, with Christmas and New Year as the peak.

If your dates are flexible, moving the trip from October to late November or early December buys much better weather for a modest price increase. If you must travel in October, keep it short, keep it west, and buy a flexible ticket.
