Cuba in December: what to expect

December sits at the start of Cuba's dry season, and it is one of the most comfortable months to move around the island. Days in Havana, Viñales and Varadero usually run in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius, with cooler evenings that call for a light layer. The centre and south coast — Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara — is a touch warmer. Oriente, around Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa, is the hottest region and Baracoa stays wet much of the year.

Rain is limited compared with the May–October wet season, but it does not disappear: a passing front can bring a grey, windy day, and cold fronts from North America occasionally push through in December and January, dropping evenings into the teens. Hurricane season ends on 30 November, so December is outside the statistical peak, though the east was still recovering from Hurricane Melissa in October 2025.

The bigger practical issue in 2026 is not the sky but the grid. Blackouts and fuel shortages affect transport and air conditioning, so a hot day without power feels worse than the thermometer suggests. Build slack into any long drive.

December is the busiest month alongside January. The first half is moderate; from around 20 December the Christmas and New Year wave arrives and casas particulares, hotels and hire cars in Havana, Trinidad and Varadero sell out. Book accommodation and any internal transport well ahead, and expect the best-known paladares to need a reservation.

Prices follow demand. Peak-season room rates are the highest of the year, and flights from Europe, Canada and Mexico fill early. Because card payments and ATMs are unreliable in Cuba, most visitors carry enough cash in euros or another convertible currency for the whole trip, plus a buffer for the days when nothing works.

If your dates are flexible, the last week of November and the first week of January are cheaper than the holiday fortnight itself, with similar weather.

The month is built around two public holidays. Christmas Day, 25 December, is a national holiday and much closes; New Year's Eve on 31 December brings parties, music and the Cuban custom of throwing buckets of water out of windows at midnight. Both fall inside the visitor peak, so plan meals and travel around them.

Havana's film festival has traditionally been held in early December and is the country's main cinema event, but dates move — check before you build a trip around it. Elsewhere, December is a strong month for live music in Havana and Santiago de Cuba, and for the small town fiestas that mark the end of the year.

December suits the classic circuit. Give Havana four nights: the old city, the Malecón and the museums are all walkable, and the weather is made for it. Add two nights in Viñales for the limestone valley and tobacco farms, and three in Trinidad, where the colonial streets and the nearby Escambray hills are at their best in the dry season.

If you want beach time, Varadero and the northern cays are warm enough to swim in December, though a cold front can make the water bracing for a day or two. In the east, Santiago de Cuba is lively and hot; Baracoa is greener and wetter, so keep a spare day for rain. Cienfuegos and Santa Clara work well as one-night stops between Havana and Trinidad.

Wherever you go, keep two buffer days in the plan. Fuel shortages and cancelled internal flights are the most common way a Cuban itinerary breaks.

Pack for warm days and cool evenings: light cotton clothes, a light jacket or jumper for nights and air-conditioned buses, and comfortable shoes for uneven colonial streets. A rain shell is worth the space for the odd front, and a hat and high-factor sunscreen for the strong winter sun.

The Cuba-specific items matter more than the clothing. Bring enough cash for the whole trip in a convertible currency, a power bank for blackouts, a torch or headlamp, and any medication you need in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription. A reusable water bottle and a small first-aid kit round it out. Mosquito repellent is useful in the east and after rain.

November is the shoulder month before the peak: dry season has returned, crowds are medium and prices are lower, though the odd storm tail is still possible. January is the driest and coolest month, with the same high prices and crowds as late December and a national holiday on 1 January.

October is still inside the storm window and best avoided for a first trip. February stays dry and busy, with the Havana Book Fair in some years. If December's prices are the problem, November is the closest match on weather.
