Tipperary is Ireland's landlocked middle: fertile Golden Vale farmland, a ring of hills on the edges, and the River Shannon and Lough Derg along the north-west. Most visitors see it as a green blur from the Dublin–Cork train or motorway. The two places that justify stopping are Cashel, for the Rock, and Cahir, for the castle and the Galtee foothills. Both sit on the M8 and the Dublin–Cork bus line, so they work without a car. Clonmel, Nenagh and Thurles are working market towns with their own draws — hurling in Thurles, the Suir valley in Clonmel — but they reward a car and a slower pace. Two nights covers the highlights; three lets you add the Glen of Aherlow or a Lough Derg village.

Tipperary is landlocked and spread out: without a car, plan around the M8 towns (Cashel, Cahir) and the mainline rail stops.
Branch-line trains to Nenagh and Roscrea run only about twice a day, Monday to Saturday; check before you build a day around them.
Sunday and evening buses across the county are sparse; the last return from a day trip may be early.

Tipperary lowlands: Rain spread across the year; the low, fertile ground is wetter than the east coast. Hills on the edges (Galtees, Slievenamon) catch more rain and cloud.

May, June and September give the best mix of daylight and drier days; July and August are busiest at Cashel. Winter days are short and many small attractions close or run reduced hours.
