County Cork is Ireland's largest county, and its two halves do not work the same way. Cork city and its harbour towns — Cobh, Kinsale, Blarney, Midleton — are compact and reachable by train and bus, so you can sleep in one place and day-trip. The west — Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Baltimore, Bantry, Castletownbere, the Mizen and Sheep's Head peninsulas — is stony, scattered and thinly served by bus. Pick one western base and drive out from it; do not try to see both halves from a single hotel.
