CoshoctonCoshocton, Ohio

Give Coshocton one night, two at most: Roscoe Village plus one museum fills a day, and you need a car for everything else.

Coshocton is a small Ohio county seat at the meeting of the Tuscarawas and Walhonding rivers, about 124 km northeast of Columbus. Its draw is Roscoe Village, a restored 1830s Ohio & Erie Canal port, plus a county museum and a summer arts schedule. Sights sit 2–4 km apart with no useful bus network, so a car is the practical way to see it. Most travellers pass through on US 36 or stop one night between Columbus, Zanesville and Amish Country.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Drive. US 36, SR 16, SR 83 and SR 541 meet here and the sights are spread along them. There is no useful fixed-route bus for visitors and no rideshare guarantee outside the centre; a rental car or your own vehicle is the realistic option. Downtown to Roscoe Village is about 2 km, a 25-min walk on the river trail in good weather.

Door to door: 10 min by car, 25 min on foot

Drive or walk from downtown, about 2 km (1.2 mi) west on SR 541/Whitewoman St

Pottery and art museums plus a bigger dining choice; easy half-day.

Door to door: About 40 min

Useful for supplies and a wider motel choice.

Door to door: About 50 min

I-77 south via US 36, about 55 km (34 mi)

Glass and pottery heritage; pairs well with a Zanesville loop.

Mariettacaution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

SR 83 south to I-77, about 130 km (81 mi)

Long for a return day; better as an overnight on a river route.

Columbusovernight

SR 16 to I-270, about 124 km (77 mi)

The state capital and the nearest big airport; treat it as a separate stop.

Watch out

Safety

Coshocton is a low-crime small town and the practical risks are driving ones: deer on rural roads at dusk, winter ice, and long unlit stretches between sights. Lock the car and keep to lit streets downtown at night.
  • Distances between sights are car distances: Roscoe Village, the museum and the fairgrounds are not a walkable cluster.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the county back roads.
  • Winter brings ice on SR 83 and the river bridges; drive to conditions.
  • Small-town hours: many shops and the museum keep limited days — check before you build a day around them.
  • Rideshare and taxi supply is thin; arrange your evening return before you go out.
