How to get there
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 30–35 km north of the city centre. The airport expressway bus and the taxi or app ride both run to Fort and Kollupitiya; allow 45–90 minutes depending on traffic. The coastal railway from the south (Galle, Hikkaduwa) and the hill country line from Kandy both terminate at Colombo Fort station, which puts you in the middle of the old city.
If you are arriving on a long-haul flight, book the first night near Fort or Kollupitiya so you can walk out rather than cross the city. For onward travel, the train is the scenic choice to Galle and Kandy, but seats sell out on weekends and around Poya days.
