ClearlakeClearlake, California
Give Clearlake 2 nights if you want the lake and Mount Konocti; 1 night is enough if you are only passing through on CA-29.
Clearlake sits at the southern end of Clear Lake, the largest natural lake entirely inside California and more than 1.5 million years old. It is a small lakeside city of about 15,000 people, not a resort town: you come for water, hiking and quiet, and you need a car to do any of it. Two nights covers the lake, Mount Konocti and Anderson Marsh without rushing.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is effectively required. Lake Transit runs buses between Clearlake, Lower Lake, Kelseyville, Lakeport and on to Calistoga and Ukiah, but frequencies are low and stops are spread out (check current timetables). CA-29 and CA-53 are the two main roads; the lake loop is about 100 km and takes 1.5–2 h without stops (check).

Drive CA-29 north along the west shore, about 35 min
County seat with the better restaurant and waterfront selection; easy half-day.
Middletown
cautionDoor to door: About 45 min

Mostly a pass-through stop on the way to Napa; not worth a dedicated trip.
Door to door: 1.5 h

A full day or an overnight; the road is winding and slow.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer wildfire smoke can close roads and ruin the view: check air quality and Caltrans road conditions before you drive.
- Lake levels drop late in the season; boat ramps and some marina services may be unusable — call ahead (check).
- Cell coverage is patchy on the east shore and around Mount Konocti (check).
- Anderson Marsh is a wildlife preserve and is not dog-friendly.
- Rural roads are dark and deer are common at dusk.
