Chugoku is the western end of Honshu: the San'yo Shinkansen runs along the south coast through Hiroshima and Okayama, while the north coast (San'in) is slower limited-express country facing the Japan Sea. Most travellers see Hiroshima and Miyajima and skip the rest. If you have three or more nights, split them: a southern base for the Peace Park, Miyajima and the Shimanami Kaido, and a northern night for Izumo Shrine, Matsue Castle and the Tottori dunes. Distances are long east to west, so pick two bases rather than moving every night.
