Chandler is a service town on the south shore of the Gaspé Peninsula, built around a pulp mill that closed in 1999. It is a village-rélais: a small place with more beds, fuel and food than its size suggests, useful when you are driving Route 132. The draws are the beaches west of downtown and the 18th-century Pabos site; the town itself is spread out and you need a car.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and beaches sit 5–15 km apart along Route 132 and the town is not walkable end to end. RéGÎM regional buses run weekday routes to Percé and Paspébiac (some trips need a reservation 24 h ahead); taxis cover short hops.

Watch out

Safety

Chandler is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving: moose and deer on Route 132 at dusk, long empty stretches between services, and cold water on the beaches — the lifeguarded stretch is Pabos Bank in Jul–Aug only.
  • Distances between beaches and the centre are longer than they look: plan on driving.
  • Many restaurants, museums and galleries open only in summer; check hours before you rely on them.
  • RéGÎM buses are weekday-only and some runs require booking a day ahead.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on stretches of Route 132 outside town.
