Rules in force · 6Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) giv…
  • Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
  • Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
  • Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
  • Panama ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Panama's National Migration Service or a Panamanian consulate; proof of onward travel and funds may be asked for.
  • Panama ↗Do not travel independently in the Darién; the UK and other governments warn against parts of it, and there is no road crossing to Colombia.
  • Panama ↗Guna Yala (San Blas) is governed by the Guna people: visitor fees apply, and photography of people usually needs permission and payment. Book through Guna-run or licensed operators.

Central Panama is the country's working core: the Canal, Panama City, the rainforest that lines the waterway, the mountain town of El Valle, and the Spanish forts on the Caribbean side. Almost everything is within 1–3 hours of Panama City, so you can sleep in one place and move by day. Two nights outside the capital — Gamboa for wildlife, El Valle for cool air, Portobelo for the Caribbean — is the usual shape. Colón city is a port and shopping zone, not a place to stay.

  • Do not walk the Canal locks at night, and do not enter the Darién — it is outside this region and unsafe.

Panama City and the Pacific side
Dry season roughly mid-December to April; May–November is wet, with heavy afternoon showers and the highest humidity in September–October.
El Valle and the interior
Cooler than the city by several degrees; mornings clear, cloud builds after midday.
Portobelo and the Caribbean side
Rainier than the Pacific side and can rain in any month; the calmest, driest window is February–April.

Carnival (February) fills Panama City hotels and closes some roads; book ahead if your dates overlap.

Regional passes

Verdict first

Panama Canal Railway

check

Scenic one-way link between the two cities; runs on a limited weekday schedule, so it rarely replaces a bus.

Metro and Metrobús card

buy

Needed for city buses and the metro; buy and top up at Albrook or station kiosks.

Rental car

check

Useful for El Valle and the Caribbean coast where buses are slow; not worth it inside Panama City.
