Cape Town in October: what to expect

October is the last full month of Cape Town's spring, and it behaves like it: warm, bright mornings, a good chance of a dry afternoon, and the occasional cold front that brings a day of rain and wind before clearing. It is not yet the hot, dry, windy summer of January, and it is nothing like the wet winter of June to August.

Expect roughly 21–23 °C (70–73 °F) at the warmest part of the day and 11–13 °C (52–55 °F) at night, so a light jacket matters after sunset. Rain days are in the region of five to seven for the month, usually as short frontal bursts rather than all-day drizzle. Sunshine hours are climbing towards summer levels.

Two things catch visitors out. First, the south-easter wind: it can blow hard for a day or two and shut the Table Mountain cableway, so keep a flexible day for the summit. Second, the Atlantic is still cold — about 15–16 °C (59–61 °F) — which is fine for a quick dip or a surf in a wetsuit, less so for long swims. False Bay beaches such as Muizenberg and Fish Hoek are a degree or two warmer than Camps Bay and the Atlantic seaboard.

October sits in the sweet spot between the quiet winter and the December–January domestic holiday peak. Weekdays are calm; weekends bring locals to the beaches, the Winelands and the Constantia wine route, so book popular restaurants and any Saturday wine tasting a few days ahead.

Prices are mid-range. Flights and hotels are noticeably cheaper than in December and January, and you will usually find better availability for the Table Mountain cableway, Robben Island ferries and Cape Point. Car hire is reasonable, though book early if you want an automatic for a Garden Route add-on.

The main thing that changes the picture is a long weekend. October has no national public holiday in South Africa, but school terms and any local events can still push up demand — check your exact dates before assuming low season.

Cape Town's October calendar is lighter than summer's, but there is still plenty happening. The whale season off Hermanus, about two hours east of the city, runs roughly June to November, and October is a strong month for boat-based and cliff-path sightings. The Cape Winelands are in spring growth, with vineyards green and the first warm-weather tastings in full swing.

Spring flowers are mostly a West Coast and Namaqualand story by October — the peak is August and September — but you can still find colour in the Cederberg and West Coast National Park early in the month. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is at its best in spring, with the annual spring display and the Boomslang canopy walkway open.

October is a good month for the classic Cape Town circuit. Table Mountain is usually clear enough for the cableway, though the wind can close it — go on the first clear, calm morning of your trip. The Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope drive is excellent now, with fewer tour buses than in December and green fynbos along the way.

The Winelands are at their most comfortable: warm but not hot, so a day in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek works well. The Garden Route is also opening up, with mild temperatures and rain in every month, so pack a shell. For beaches, Camps Bay and Clifton are for looking at rather than swimming; Muizenberg and Fish Hoek are the better bet for a dip.

If you have time, add a whale day in Hermanus and a Peninsula day through Simon's Town to Boulders Beach for the penguin colony.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a warm layer for mornings and evenings, a light waterproof shell for a passing front, and sun protection for the middle of the day. Comfortable walking shoes matter for Table Mountain, Lion's Head and the city's steep streets.

If you plan to swim or surf, bring or hire a wetsuit — the Atlantic is cold. A refillable water bottle, a power adapter for South Africa's Type M and Type C plugs, and a card or cash for parking and tips round out the list.

September is cooler and wetter, with the flower season still running and whales in Walker Bay. November warms up further and the first summer crowds arrive, with prices starting to climb. December is peak domestic holiday season — book six to twelve months ahead if you want that window.
