Cape Town in December: what to expect

December is Cape Town's dry summer. Rain is rare and usually arrives as a short front rather than a washed-out day, so a week here normally means seven usable days outdoors. Daytime highs sit around 26 °C and nights around 16 °C, but the Atlantic seaboard and the city bowl can feel hotter in the afternoon sun.

The bigger variable is wind. The south-easter — locals call it the Cape Doctor — funnels through the city in summer and can blow for two or three days at a time. It closes the Table Mountain cableway, cancels boat trips to Robben Island and makes Camps Bay uncomfortable. Plan the mountain and any water-based trip for the first calm morning you get, not the last day of the trip.

The sea is cold on the Atlantic side (Camps Bay, Clifton) at roughly 18–19 °C and noticeably warmer in False Bay at Muizenberg and Fish Hoek. UV is extreme between 11:00 and 15:00; the sun burns even when the wind makes it feel cool.

This is the busiest month of the South African year. Local schools break up in early December and the holidays run into mid-January, so Cape Town fills with domestic travellers on top of the international summer traffic. Hotels in the city bowl, Sea Point, Camps Bay and the Winelands sell out, and the Garden Route beds go with them.

Prices follow: December is peak for flights into Cape Town International, car hire and accommodation. Book 6–12 months ahead for the best choice, and expect minimum-stay rules over Christmas and New Year. Restaurants on the Atlantic seaboard need reservations days ahead; the popular Table Mountain and Robben Island slots go first.

The upside is that everything is open, staffed and running at full capacity — markets, wine farms, boat trips and the cableway all operate daily, weather permitting.

The month is built around the summer holiday rather than a single festival. New Year's Eve on 31 December brings crowds to the V&A Waterfront and the beaches, and 1 January is a public holiday with beaches and roads at their fullest.

The Kirstenbosch summer sunset concerts run on Sunday evenings through the season, and the Winelands and Cape Point are at their busiest. Check current dates and tickets locally, as line-ups and schedules change each year.

Do Table Mountain and the cableway on a clear, calm morning — the first one of your trip. The same applies to the Robben Island ferry, which is weather-dependent. The Atlantic seaboard beaches (Clifton, Camps Bay) are for hot, still days; when the south-easter blows, head to the False Bay side at Muizenberg, Fish Hoek or Kalk Bay instead.

Inland, the Winelands around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are 45–60 minutes away and hot in December — go early, book a tasting, and don't plan to drive after a long lunch. Cape Point and the Cape Peninsula make a full day; the drive through Simon's Town and Boulders Beach is the classic loop.

For a longer stay, the Garden Route east of Cape Town is at its best in December weather-wise, but every bed is booked — reserve before you commit.

Pack for hot, dry, windy days and cool evenings: light layers, a windproof jacket, a hat that ties on, high-factor sunscreen and sunglasses. Bring swimwear for the beaches and a warmer layer for the evening and for the wind on the mountain.

If you plan to hike or drive the peninsula, add proper shoes, a refillable water bottle and a power bank. A light rain shell is worth the space even in the dry season.

If December is full or too expensive, the shoulder months give you most of the weather with fewer people. November is warm and dry with medium crowds and prices; March is settled, quieter and cheaper. January keeps the heat but the school holidays run into mid-month, so the first half is still busy.

October is cooler and greener with medium crowds, and February is the warmest sea month on the Cape with harvest in the Winelands.
