Cancún in April: what to expect

April sits at the end of the dry season on the Yucatán and Caribbean coast. The parent country data rates this zone as hot for April, and Mérida, two hours inland, is hotter still. Days are hot and humid, mornings are usually clear, and rain — when it comes — tends to be a short afternoon shower rather than a washed-out day.

The bigger April story is heat rather than rain. UV is strong between 11:00 and 15:00, and the humidity makes 32 °C feel heavier than the number suggests. Plan beach or cenote time early, shade or air-conditioning at midday, and outdoor ruins before 10:00.

Sea temperatures stay around 27 °C, so swimming and snorkelling are comfortable without a wetsuit. Nights are warm enough for shorts and a light layer only if you run cold in air-conditioned restaurants.

April is one of the busiest months of the Mexican calendar because of Semana Santa, the Easter week holiday. National travel peaks, offices close on the Thursday and Friday, and Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum fill with Mexican families as well as international visitors. Expect full beaches, long restaurant waits and higher room rates.

The pressure is not even across the month. If Easter falls early, the last week of April can be noticeably calmer and cheaper; if Easter falls late, the whole month stays tight. Check the Easter dates for your travel year before you book, then aim for the week after Easter week if you want the same weather with fewer people.

Book flights and rooms two to three months ahead for Easter week. Airport transfers and popular cenote or Chichén Itzá day trips also sell out, so reserve those before arrival rather than on the day.

The month's main event is Semana Santa, Mexico's biggest travel week, which usually falls in late March or April depending on the year. Beaches and buses fill, and many businesses close on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Confirm the exact dates for your year — they move.

Cancún itself is a resort city rather than a festival town, so April programming is mostly hotel and beach-club events, spring-break tail-end parties and live music in the hotel zone. For cultural events, look to Mérida and Valladolid inland, where Easter processions are more traditional.

Check local listings closer to your dates: specific concerts, sports fixtures and beach-club line-ups change every year and are not fixed calendar events.

Use the mornings for anything outdoors. Chichén Itzá and Tulum ruins are hot and crowded by 11:00, so go at opening or take a guided early tour. Cenotes around Puerto Morelos and Valladolid are cool, shaded and best before the tour buses arrive.

For the beach, the hotel zone has the calmest, best-serviced stretches, while Isla Mujeres and Holbox offer a slower pace a short ferry or drive away. Isla Mujeres is the easy day trip; Holbox needs at least one night to be worth the transfer.

If seaweed is heavy on the Caribbean-facing beaches, shift to the lagoon side of the hotel zone, to Isla Mujeres' north beach, or to a cenote for the day. Inland options such as Valladolid, Bacalar and the Yucatán's colonial towns are unaffected by sargassum.

Pack for heat and sun first: light, loose clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor reef-safe sunscreen. Reef-safe matters here — several cenotes and marine parks ask for it, and it is better for the reef you are swimming over.

Bring a light rain shell or compact umbrella for the odd afternoon shower, and a refillable water bottle; tap water is not for drinking, so plan on bottled or filtered refills. Comfortable sandals plus one pair of closed shoes for ruins and cenotes cover almost everything.

Add insect repellent for evenings and any inland trips, a swimsuit you can wear under clothes for spontaneous cenote stops, and a small dry bag for boat and ferry days.

March is similar in weather but carries spring-break crowds and can be windier. May turns hotter and more humid, with the rains starting late in the month and sargassum more likely — but crowds and prices drop after Easter.

If your dates are flexible, late April and early May give you the same beach weather with fewer people. If you want the driest, coolest version of Cancún, aim for December to February instead.
