Logan, UtahLogan

Give Logan 2 nights as a Cache Valley base: canyon hikes, USU campus, cheap beds. Skip it as a day trip from Salt Lake City — 75–90 min each way.

Logan is a university town of about 23,000 students in Cache Valley, 75–90 minutes north of Salt Lake City by car. It is a base for Logan Canyon hiking, climbing, skiing and snowmobiling rather than a sightseeing city, and it stays far quieter than Park City or the Salt Lake resorts. Two nights covers the canyon and downtown; three if you add Bear Lake or a ski day.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Main Street is congested but parallel streets move faster, and Logan Canyon (US 89) is drive-only for the upper trailheads. Connect Transit buses run free on half-hourly routes from the downtown transit centre and carry two or three bikes each. Bicycle lanes exist on some main roads; the climb to campus is steep enough to deter casual riders.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Bear Lake (Garden City)

go

Door to door: About 1 h

US 89 east through Logan Canyon, about 40 miles

Beach and raspberry shakes in summer; the canyon drive is the point.

Beaver Mountain ski area

go

Door to door: About 45 min

US 89 up Logan Canyon, then the signed access road

Smaller than the Salt Lake resorts but far less crowded.

Cherry Peak ski area

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

US 91 north to Richmond, then local roads

Lower elevation, so snow cover is less reliable.

Salt Lake City

skip

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

US 89/91 through Sardine Canyon to I-15 south

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in Salt Lake instead.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Logan (Main St / Center St)

Walkable to cafés, restaurants and the tabernacle; motels on South Main and North Main.

North Main St (US 91)

Chain hotels and the Hampton Inn; a 5–10 min drive to downtown, easy parking.

USU campus east side

University Inn and campus lodging; about 250 ft higher than downtown, so walking up is a climb.

Logan Canyon and Bear River Range

US Forest Service campgrounds and dispersed sites; bring your own water and expect cold nights.

Watch out

Safety

Logan has very little crime and is regularly listed among the safest US cities; the real risks are winter cold, valley inversions that aggravate asthma, and canyon roads in snow.
  • Winter inversions trap cold air and pollution in the valley — drive five minutes up any canyon to get above it.
  • Logan Canyon roads can close at any time in heavy snow; check conditions before setting out.
  • High trails above 9,000 ft often hold snow into July; low south-facing trails can be hikeable from March.
  • Only members with a temple recommend may enter the Logan Utah Temple; the grounds are open to all.
  • Guinavah-Malibu campground in Logan Canyon has been closed for reconstruction — confirm before relying on it.
