Cancún in May: what to expect

May is the last dry-ish month before the Caribbean wet season. Days are hot and humid, mornings are usually clear, and the rain that does fall tends to arrive as a short, heavy afternoon or evening burst rather than all-day drizzle. The first half of the month is noticeably drier than the last ten days.

Heat is the bigger issue than rain. Midday sun on the beach is strong enough to burn quickly, and humidity makes walking around the Hotel Zone or downtown feel heavier than the temperature suggests. Air conditioning, shade and water matter more in May than in the winter months.

The sea stays warm, so swimming and snorkelling are comfortable without a wetsuit. Pool temperatures are fine. The main variable is the wind: calm days leave the water clear, while a windy spell stirs up sand and reduces visibility at reef sites.

May sits in the gap between the spring-break and Easter peak and the North American summer holidays. Spring breakers are gone by early April, and US school holidays do not start until late May, so the first three weeks are one of the better-value windows of the year on this coast.

Room rates ease after the first week of the month, and all-inclusive resorts often run promotions to fill space before June. Flights are usually cheaper than in March, April, July and December. The last week of May and the US Memorial Day weekend bring a short spike, so book that window early if it matters.

Beach clubs and tour operators are busy but not overwhelmed. Popular cenotes and Chichén Itzá are easier to visit in May than in the winter high season, though the midday heat at archaeological sites is a real constraint — go at opening time.

May is a quiet month for large festivals in Cancún itself. The national public holiday is Labour Day on 1 May, when banks and some offices close and Mexican families take a long weekend — beaches and ferries to Isla Mujeres get busier, but nothing like Semana Santa.

The bigger regional event of the season is in the Yucatán interior rather than on the coast. Mérida holds its own May cultural programme, and the state fair season in Yucatán runs through the spring. In Cancún, most of what happens is resort-led: pool parties, live music nights and dive-shop trips, rather than street festivals.

Check locally for the exact dates of anything you want to attend; dates shift year to year and some events are announced only a few weeks ahead.

The beach is the point of May. Hotel Zone beaches and the quieter stretches at Playa Delfines and Playa Gaviota Azul work well in the morning; by early afternoon the sun is punishing and the sand is hot. Isla Mujeres, a short ferry ride away, has calmer water and a breezier feel, and is a good day trip when the mainland feels sticky.

For ruins, go early. Chichén Itzá and Tulum both open in the morning and are far more bearable before 10am; Tulum also has the advantage of a swimmable cove below the cliffs. Coba, inland and shaded by trees, is another option if you want to climb and cycle rather than stand in the open sun.

Cenotes are at their best in May: the water is cool, the crowds are moderate, and the jungle setting is greener than in the dry winter. Reef snorkelling and diving depend on wind and seaweed — ask your operator on the day rather than booking a week ahead.

Pack for heat, humidity and sudden rain. Light, loose clothing in breathable fabrics; a hat and sunglasses; reef-safe sunscreen if you plan to swim; and a compact rain shell or umbrella for the afternoon storms. Sandals and one pair of closed shoes for ruins and cenotes cover most days.

Bring more swimwear than you think you need — it will not dry overnight in the humidity. A refillable water bottle is useful, and mosquito repellent matters more from late May as the rains begin. If you are prone to heat exhaustion, add rehydration sachets.

April is hotter and drier than May, with spring-break and Easter crowds and higher prices. June is wetter, cheaper and quieter, with the hurricane season officially open and sargassum often heavier on the Caribbean beaches.

If you want the classic Cancún beach holiday — dry, clear water, comfortable heat — aim for December to April. If you want lower prices and can accept afternoon rain and some seaweed, May and June are the value window.
