The detail
The ADO coach is the default for downtown. It runs from outside the terminals to the ADO terminal on Avenida Tulum in the city centre, roughly every 30 minutes through the day, less often overnight. Buy at the ADO counter inside the arrivals hall or on the ADO app; you do not need to book far ahead. From the downtown terminal, local buses and cheap taxis reach most of the city, and the Hotel Zone is a 20–30 minute ride south along the strip.
Pre-paid taxis work on a zone system: you pay at a counter inside the terminal, then take the ticket to the driver outside. This removes the negotiation and the risk of an inflated price. Fares are set by zone, so the Hotel Zone costs more than downtown. If you booked a private transfer, the driver usually waits in the arrivals area with a name sign.
Ride-hailing apps are restricted at Cancún airport and in parts of the city because of local taxi rules, so do not count on an Uber or DiDi pick-up at the terminal. If you want an app car, walk out to the main road or arrange it from your hotel instead.
The Tren Maya is a separate system. Its Cancún station is in the city, not at the airport, and the airport-area stop is not a walk-up transfer. If your plan is Tulum, Playa del Carmen or Mérida by rail, get to the station by taxi or bus first and check the timetable, because some legs run only a few trains a day.

Tips
- Ignore drivers who approach you inside the terminal offering a 'cheap' ride; use the official counter or the ADO desk.
- Keep small peso notes for the bus and for tips; airport ATMs can run out of cash on busy days.
- Confirm whether your hotel is in downtown (Centro) or the Hotel Zone — the transfer time and price differ a lot.
- If you land after midnight, pre-book a transfer rather than relying on the bus schedule.
- For Cozumel or Isla Mujeres, you still need to reach the ferry pier first; add that leg to your plan.
