How we chose
We ranked places on four things: how much of the day is spent moving rather than doing, whether there is a wet-day indoor option, whether one base covers several activities, and how easy the place is to reach without a car. Anything needing a long daily drive with young children was pushed down or left out.
We also weighted shoulder-season value. Late June and early September are usually cheaper and quieter than July and August, and the weather is still good in most of the country. Prices in this page are 2026 estimates; check current rates before booking.

Best time to go
Summer is the safe answer for a first family trip: long days, warm weather and everything open. It is also the busiest and priciest. Late June and early September give you most of the weather with fewer crowds.
Winter is a real option if the point of the trip is snow. Whistler Blackcomb and Québec City both run ski schools and family activities, and February brings the Québec City winter carnival. Expect genuine cold: −10 to −20 °C is normal in central Canada, so proper layers matter more than any single jacket.

Getting there
Most families fly into Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) or Vancouver, then move by train, car or a short domestic flight. The east is easy without a car: VIA Rail links Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and Québec City, and Niagara Falls is a day trip by train from Toronto. The west is easier with a car, especially the Rockies, where Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper sit along one highway.
Do not try to drive between the two halves. Calgary or Edmonton to Toronto is about 4 hours by air and several long days by road. Pick one half for a first trip and fly between them only if you have two weeks or more.
- East without a car: Toronto → Ottawa → Montréal → Québec City by train.
- West with a car: Calgary → Banff → Lake Louise → Icefields Parkway → Jasper → Calgary.
- Vancouver Island: ferry from Vancouver, then drive; book summer sailings ahead.
- Gaspé: a long drive from Québec City, or a short flight to Gaspé and a rental car.
