Summary by traveller, month and cost

>- Use this table to pick a half of the country before you book flights. Costs are 2026 estimates for one person per day, mid-range, excluding flights.

>- If you have 7–10 days, choose one column. With 14 days you can fly between the two halves and see both.

How to choose, step by step

>Step 1: count your nights. Under 10 nights, one half only. The distance between Vancouver and Toronto is about 4,400 km by road, so a car or train between them eats the trip.

>Step 2: pick the landscape. West is mountains, lakes and ocean; east is old cities, French Canada and Niagara Falls. Both work in summer; winter favours the east for Québec City and Montréal.

>Step 3: fix the anchor stops. West: Vancouver 3 nights, Banff 3, Lake Louise 1, Jasper 2–3, driving the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. East: Toronto 3 nights with a Niagara day trip, then VIA Rail to Montréal for 2–3 nights and Québec City for 2.

>Step 4: add one extra. From Vancouver, Whistler or Victoria and Tofino on Vancouver Island. From Toronto, Niagara Falls and wine country. From Halifax, Cape Breton Island and the Bay of Fundy.

>Step 5: book the constrained pieces first. Moraine Lake shuttles, Jasper beds, Rockies campsites and the Calgary–Toronto flight sell out for July and August. Train seats on the Toronto–Montréal–Québec City corridor are easier but still worth booking ahead.

  • >Under 10 nights: one half only.
  • >10–14 nights: west by car, or east by train.
  • >14+ nights: both halves, one domestic flight.
  • >Winter: Québec City and Montréal.
  • >Book shuttles, Jasper beds and the cross-country flight first.

Notes

>Distances are large. Vancouver to Banff is about 850 km by road; Calgary to Jasper about 5 hours. Plan travel days as travel days.

>The Rockies sit at altitude and weather changes fast; carry layers even in July. Wildlife is real: keep food stored and carry bear spray on trails.

>Niagara Falls is a day trip from Toronto, not a base, unless you want the wine country nearby. Ottawa fits between Toronto and Montréal if you have a spare day.

>Entry rules differ by passport. US citizens generally need no visa but need a valid passport; most other visitors need an eTA or a visa. Confirm your own case before booking.
