Canada adventure itinerary: hikes, wildlife and outdoors

This is the west-coast adventure line: ocean and rainforest first, then the Rockies by car. It matches the 10-day Vancouver and Rockies route on the country page, with walking and wildlife time built in rather than added on. Activity suggestions below are check — confirm trail, shuttle and road status locally.

Days 1–3, Vancouver. The country page gives Vancouver 3 nights as the west-coast start; use them for Stanley Park, the Sea to Sky corridor and a half-day hike or whale-watching run (check).

Day 4, fly to Calgary and drive to Banff, about 1.5 h (check).

Days 5–6, Banff and Lake Louise. The country page lists Banff 3 nights and Lake Louise 1 night; Moraine Lake and Lake Louise hikes need shuttle or parking bookings in summer (check).

Day 7, the Icefields Parkway north to Jasper, with Peyto Lake and the Columbia Icefield area as stops (check).

Days 8–9, Jasper. The country page gives Jasper 2 nights; Maligne Canyon and Maligne Lake Road are the usual bases for walking and wildlife (check).

Day 10 is a travel day: drive Jasper to Calgary, about 5 h, or fly out of Edmonton (check). Add days only if you want to push into Yoho or Mount Robson (check).

In Vancouver, downtown or Kitsilano keeps you near the seawall; the airport area is cheaper but adds a train ride each morning (check).

In the Rockies, Banff town has the most beds and food. Lake Louise has few options and they sell out first. Jasper is smaller and fills earliest in July and August — book it before you book flights if your dates are fixed (check).

Camping is the cheap adventure option: Parks Canada campgrounds at Tunnel Mountain, Lake Louise and Whistlers take reservations and open months ahead (check). Hostels in Banff and Jasper are the middle ground (check).

Three things decide whether this itinerary works: Jasper beds, the Moraine Lake shuttle, and a rental car picked up in Calgary and dropped in Calgary or Edmonton (check). Without the car you are limited to shuttles and tours, which cost more per day and cut the wildlife drives (check).

Parks Canada requires a discovery pass or day pass for national parks; buy it at the gate or online (check). Boat trips on Maligne Lake and the Columbia Icefield are separate paid bookings (check).

2026 estimate, check: about CAD 250–400 per person per day for two people sharing covers a mid-range room, a rental car split two ways, food, fuel and park fees. Camping and hostels drop that to roughly CAD 120–200 (check). Lodging in Banff and Jasper is the line that moves most.

Shorter, 7 days (check): skip Vancouver, fly into Calgary, do Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper only. This is the tightest version that still includes the Icefields Parkway.

Longer, 14 days (check): add Vancouver Island — Victoria and Tofino — before the Rockies, or push north to Mount Robson and Jasper's backcountry.

Easier level (check): stay in Banff and Lake Louise, use shuttles and guided walks, skip the long drives. Harder level (check): add a multi-day backcountry trip in Jasper or a via ferrata near Banff, both of which need permits or guides.
