Canada honeymoon itinerary: romantic route

This is the west loop from the country guide, slowed down for a honeymoon: fewer stops, longer mornings, one splurge dinner per stop. Fly into Vancouver and out of Calgary so you never backtrack. If you only have a week, cut Jasper and keep Vancouver, Banff and Lake Louise.

Distances are long between stops, so plan two nights minimum anywhere you want to feel settled. The Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper is the scenic spine of the trip; drive it in one day with stops rather than rushing it in an afternoon.

For a honeymoon the address matters more than the star rating. In Vancouver, stay downtown near the seawall so evenings are walkable. In Banff, a hotel in town keeps restaurants close; a lodge outside town buys quiet. At Lake Louise, the lakefront hotel is the splurge — book months ahead for a lake-view room. In Jasper, in-town hotels are simpler and cheaper than the out-of-town lodges.

Mountain properties sell out for July and August and for early September weekends (check current availability). If the lakefront is gone, take a cabin or boutique inn nearby and book a dinner or spa slot at the famous property instead.

Book these before flights, because they set your dates: Rockies beds in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper; the Moraine Lake shuttle; and any lakefront dinner or spa. Parks Canada shuttle seats for Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are released in advance and summer dates can sell out — confirm release dates and rules with Parks Canada (check). Rental cars in Calgary and Vancouver are tight in July and August — reserve early and check whether your hotel charges for parking (check).

Domestic flights between Vancouver and Calgary are frequent; booking two to three months out is a common rule of thumb for better fares (check). If you add Vancouver Island, reserve the ferry or a floatplane seat in summer (check).

Expect roughly CAD 5,500–9,000 per couple for 10 nights on the ground, flights excluded (2026 estimate; check). The low end means mid-range hotels, self-drive and one splurge; the high end means lakefront rooms, a few guided days and nicer dinners. Food and drink in resort towns run higher than in the cities.

The biggest single lever is accommodation in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Shifting two nights from a lakefront hotel to a nearby inn can save several hundred dollars without changing the trip.

If mountains are not the point, the eastern cities by train suit a honeymoon better: Toronto 3 nights, Montréal 2–3, Québec City 2, all by VIA Rail, with Niagara as a day trip. It is slower, walkable and food-led, and you can fly home from Montréal.

For a shorter trip, do Vancouver plus Vancouver Island — Victoria and Tofino — for about 7 nights (check ferry and flight connections).
