Calpe is a Costa Blanca resort built around one landmark: the 332 m limestone rock of Penyal d'Ifac, which drops straight into the sea. The old town is small and walkable, the two main beaches sit on either side of the rock, and the TRAM light rail links the whole coast from Dénia to Alicante. Two or three nights covers the rock, the beaches and one day trip; a week suits families and repeat visitors who want beach time.

Getting around

The centre, both beaches and the harbour are walkable in 20–30 minutes. Autobuses Ifach runs three local lines for about €1.20 a ride. TRAM Alicante light rail links Calpe with Benidorm, Altea and Dénia; for Alicante you change at Benidorm, and the station sits outside town, so take a bus or taxi rather than walking. A car helps for the coves and the AP-7.

Around Plaça de la Villa and the Torreó de la Peça; bars, the archaeology museum and the market streets on foot. No sea view.

Arenal-Bol

West of the rock, over a kilometre of sand with a tree-lined promenade; the widest choice of restaurants and hotels.

La Fossa–Levante

North of the rock, smaller beach, promenade and the summer bar and disco strip; closest to the Penyal d'Ifac car park.

Puerto Blanco

Smaller pebble-and-coarse-sand beach about 2 km south-west of the centre; quieter than the two main beaches, with a dive centre nearby. Bus or taxi, or a long walk.

Maryvilla

Hillside urbanisation further south-west, above Puerto Blanco; apartments and villas with sea views, but you need a car or taxi for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Calpe is a low-crime resort town; the real risks are the exposed Penyal d'Ifac climb, summer heat and sea conditions. Use the lifeguard flags, keep valuables out of sight on the beach, and watch for pickpockets in the summer festival crowds.
  • The Penyal d'Ifac climb is a steep, exposed path with a tunnel and a final scramble; wear closed shoes, carry water, and turn back in wind or rain. Access is limited in peak season — check the park's visitor rules before you go.
  • Calpe station is not walkable from the centre; use a bus or taxi.
  • The TRAM and Alsa coastal buses are the cheap options; taxis add up fast over short resort hops.
  • Beach bars and promenade restaurants in July–August get busy; book or eat early.
  • Sea conditions and jellyfish vary by week — follow the lifeguard flags on both main beaches.
