Butte is a copper boom town that kept its buildings: a National Historic Landmark district of Victorian storefronts on a steep hillside, ringed by headframes and one very large toxic pit. It is not a polished resort town, and that is the point. Most travellers see it in a day; the mines, the museums and the trails around it justify two.

Getting around

Butte is spread out and a car is the practical choice: the airport, the pit, the museum and the trailheads are all a drive apart. Uptown itself is walkable but steep. The county bus (The Bus) runs only on main streets; taxis exist but are thin.

Safety

Butte is a small city with a low violent-crime rate; the real risks are winter ice on steep Uptown streets, altitude on your first day, and the Berkeley Pit, which is fenced and toxic. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
  • The Berkeley Pit is a Superfund site: stay behind the fence and do not touch the water.
  • Uptown streets are steep and icy in winter; wear shoes with grip.
  • Altitude is about 1,700 m: pace your first day.
  • Winter storms close mountain passes; check road conditions before driving to Bozeman or Helena.
  • Some museums and tours run seasonally or by appointment only: check before you build a day around one.
