Butte
Give Butte one full day and one night: Uptown on foot in the morning, the mining sites by car in the afternoon. Two nights if you want the trails.
Butte is a copper boom town that kept its buildings: a National Historic Landmark district of Victorian storefronts on a steep hillside, ringed by headframes and one very large toxic pit. It is not a polished resort town, and that is the point. Most travellers see it in a day; the mines, the museums and the trails around it justify two.

- 3 mi southeast of the centre on Harrison Ave; Delta Connection to Salt Lake City and United Express to Denver. Poor visibility can divert flights to Bozeman.

Get around
Butte is spread out and a car is the practical choice: the airport, the pit, the museum and the trailheads are all a drive apart. Uptown itself is walkable but steep. The county bus (The Bus) runs only on main streets; taxis exist but are thin.

Butte is a small city with a low violent-crime rate; the real risks are winter ice on steep Uptown streets, altitude on your first day, and the Berkeley Pit, which is fenced and toxic. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
