The honest verdict

The city is big, flat and made for long lunches and late dinners. The trips that go wrong hail unmarked cars at the airport, walk with a phone in hand on busy pavements, or plan a museum for a Monday or a protest day. Four barrios cover a first visit; Colonia in Uruguay and the day trips are a ferry away from one kept bed.

Paying: Cards are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels and shops; cash (pesos, and often US dollars) is still useful given how currency rules and exchange rates have shifted in recent years — confirm the current situation before you fly.
Cash: Check current exchange and ATM rules before you fly; carry some pesos in small notes for cafés, kiosks and taxis, and use ATMs inside banks, not on the street.

Etiquette: the top three

Greetings: One kiss on the cheek is the normal greeting between acquaintances, including between men in some circles; a handshake is fine if you are unsure.
Meal times: Lunch runs 13:00-15:00 and dinner rarely starts before 21:00; turning up at 19:00 for dinner often means an empty restaurant or a kitchen not yet open.
Mate: If someone offers you a sip of mate from their shared gourd and straw, it is a social gesture — drink, say nothing, and pass it back; do not say "gracias" until you are finished with it, as that traditionally signals you are done.
