Budapest in March: what to expect

March is Budapest's transition month. The first week still behaves like winter — grey skies, a raw wind off the Danube and occasional snow flurries. By the last week you get genuine spring days where a light jacket is enough at midday and the terraces along Liszt Ferenc tér start putting out chairs.

Expect a wide spread rather than a steady temperature. A sunny afternoon can reach the mid-teens, then a cold front drops the next day back to single figures. Wind makes the riverside and the Castle District feel colder than the number suggests, so layers beat a single heavy coat.

Rain comes as short showers rather than all-day downpours, and the thermal baths are at their most enjoyable in this weather: outdoor pools at Széchenyi and Gellért are heated, and steam in cold air is the classic Budapest experience.

March is one of the cheapest and quietest months in Budapest. Hotel and apartment rates sit near their winter floor until roughly the last ten days of the month, and you can usually walk into the Széchenyi Baths, the Parliament tour or a ruin bar without booking far ahead.

The exceptions are the 15 March long weekend and any Easter dates that fall in late March — those weekends fill city-centre hotels and push prices up. Weekdays outside those dates are the sweet spot.

Restaurants and cafés are open as normal, but some outdoor terraces and Margaret Island rental stands only reopen when the weather settles, usually late March or April.

The fixed point is 15 March, 1848 Revolution Day. Expect ceremonies and wreath-laying at the National Museum, Hungarian flags on public buildings, and some political gatherings in the centre. Shops close and museums run holiday hours, so plan around it rather than through it.

Easter sometimes falls in late March, bringing Good Friday and Easter Monday closures and a quiet, family-oriented city. In the south of the country, the Mohács Busójárás carnival usually lands in late February or early March — a day trip rather than a Budapest event.

Beyond the calendar, March is a good month for the spring season at the opera and concert halls, and for the Budapest Spring Festival programme, which sometimes opens in late March (check dates each year).

Build the trip around indoor and warm-water sights, then take the good days outdoors. The thermal baths are the obvious March win: Széchenyi's outdoor pools, Gellért's art-nouveau hall and the Rudas rooftop pool all work in cold air.

For museums, the National Museum, the House of Terror, the Hungarian National Gallery in the Castle and the Great Market Hall fill a wet day. Parliament tours run year-round and are easier to book now than in summer.

On a clear day, walk the Castle District, Fisherman's Bastion and the Danube promenade, or take the funicular up Buda Hill. Margaret Island is open but bare — blossom comes in April. If you want a day out, Szentendre and Visegrád in the Danube Bend are reachable by train and boat-free in March, and Eger or Lake Balaton are possible but still cold and partly shut.

Pack for two seasons in one bag. A waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, a scarf and gloves for the early weeks, plus one lighter layer for the mild afternoons at the end of the month.

Comfortable waterproof shoes matter more than boots — pavements are wet and the cobbles in the Castle District are slippery after rain. Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops for the baths, and a small umbrella you can leave in a day bag.

Sunglasses are worth it: low spring sun on wet streets is bright, and daylight lasts until around 18:00 by the end of March.

If March looks too cold, April is the upgrade: milder days, blossom on Margaret Island and Easter crowds, still at medium prices. May is one of the best months of the year, with outdoor terraces open and long evenings.
