Budapest in April: what to expect

April is Budapest's transition month. The first half still behaves like March — 12–14 °C afternoons, cold mornings, a jacket needed on the Danube — while the second half regularly reaches 20 °C and the terraces along Liszt Ferenc tér and the ruin bars fill up. Snow is rare but not impossible early in the month.

Rain arrives as short showers rather than set-in days, so a compact umbrella and a waterproof layer matter more than a heavy coat. Wind on the Chain Bridge and up at Fisherman's Bastion makes it feel several degrees colder than the thermometer says. Thermal baths are excellent in April: outdoor pools are open and the steam is still welcome.

April sits in the medium band: noticeably busier than February or March, well short of July and August. The exception is Easter week, when school holidays across Europe push hotel rates up and the Castle District, the Parliament tours and the Great Market Hall get genuinely crowded. Book those dates two to three months out.

Outside Easter and the 1 May long weekend, you can usually book a central hotel or apartment a few weeks ahead at a reasonable rate, and walk-up tickets for the baths and most museums are fine on weekdays. Weekend slots at the Széchenyi and Gellért baths are the one thing worth reserving in advance.

Easter is the anchor event. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, shops close, and villages around Budapest keep the old watering custom on Easter Monday. In the city, expect Easter markets, egg-painting stalls and a fuller concert calendar.

Spring also brings the Budapest Spring Festival, a long-running arts programme of classical concerts, opera and theatre that usually runs from late March into April — check the current programme and dates before you plan around it. The Budapest Marathon typically falls in April as well, closing roads along the Danube for part of a day. The national holiday on 15 March falls just before the month and can leave a busy shoulder weekend at the end of March.

This is the first month Margaret Island is worth a proper walk: blossom, the musical fountain and the running track all open up, and the island is a 20-minute walk or one tram stop from the Parliament. Buda Castle, the Fisherman's Bastion and the Citadella are comfortable on foot without summer heat, though the Citadella area has had long-running renovation work — check access before climbing.

Day trips start working again. Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom on the Danube Bend are all reachable by train or bus in an hour or so, and April is quiet compared with May. Lake Balaton is still largely shut — most resorts do not open until May — so treat it as a scenic stop, not a swimming trip.

Think layers rather than one heavy coat: a T-shirt, a light jumper, a packable rain shell and a scarf for the wind. Comfortable walking shoes matter — Budapest is a walking city and the cobbles in the Castle District are unforgiving. Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops for the baths, and a small umbrella you can keep in a day bag.

March is colder and greyer, with the 15 March national holiday; May is one of the best months of the year, with terraces fully open and Balaton starting up. If your dates are flexible and you want the best weather-to-crowd ratio, late April and May are the sweet spot.
