Brisbane in October: what to expect

October sits at the end of Brisbane's dry, mild stretch. Days are warm rather than hot, evenings are still cool enough for a light layer, and the heavy afternoon storms that define November and December have usually not arrived yet. Expect a mix of clear days and short showers, with humidity climbing in the last week.

The sun is strong. Brisbane's UV index reaches very high to extreme by October, so a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen matter even on cloudy days. Sea temperatures are still cool for long swims — most locals are in the water briefly or in a wetsuit — and patrolled beaches such as those on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast have lifeguards on weekends and during school holidays.

If you are heading north to the Great Barrier Reef or Cairns, October is the last comfortable month before the wet season and stinger season build. Reef trips still run, but check operator advice on stinger suits from late October onward.

October is a shoulder month in Brisbane. The September school holidays have finished, so midweek accommodation and attractions are quieter, while weekends still fill with locals. Prices are medium: noticeably cheaper than the December–January peak, but not the bargain of late autumn.

Book ahead for the last weekend of the month and for any weekend with a major event, when city hotels and South Bank apartments fill quickly. Domestic flights into Brisbane are usually reasonable in October, though fares jump around the October long weekend in Queensland and around the Melbourne Cup period in early November.

For the best value, stay midweek, use the ferry network to move around, and book reef or island day trips a few days ahead rather than on the day.

Brisbane's spring calendar is busy. The city's major arts festival runs across September and into early October in odd-numbered years, filling the cultural centre and South Bank with performances and free outdoor events. Check the exact dates before booking, as the schedule shifts each edition.

The Royal Queensland Show (the Ekka) is a August event, not October, so do not plan around it. In October the more reliable fixtures are spring racing meetings, outdoor cinema and food events, and the start of the cricket season at the Gabba. Halloween events at the end of the month are increasingly popular with families.

Diwali and other community festivals also appear in the calendar, and the Brisbane Riverfire fireworks display usually falls in late September, so check whether it has already passed before you travel.

Use the warm, dry days for the outdoor Brisbane: the South Bank parklands and its man-made beach, the City Botanic Gardens, the riverwalk between the Story Bridge and Kangaroo Point, and the Mount Coot-tha lookout for city views. The CityCat ferries are the cheapest sightseeing on the river.

Day trips work well in October. The Gold Coast beaches and hinterland, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, and Moreton Bay islands are all within a couple of hours. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and the Australia Zoo are easy day trips, and the Scenic Rim and Tamborine Mountain are good for walks and wineries before the summer heat.

If you want the reef, fly to Cairns or the Whitsundays rather than trying to reach it from Brisbane; October is still a reasonable window there, but the wet season is close.

Pack for warm days and cooler evenings: light breathable clothing, a light jacket or long-sleeve top for nights, comfortable walking shoes and a compact umbrella or rain shell for the occasional shower. A hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen are essential given the UV levels.

Swimwear is worth bringing for South Bank and the beaches, plus a rash vest if you plan long water time. If you are heading to the reef, bring reef-safe sunscreen and check whether the operator supplies stinger suits. A refillable water bottle is useful, as Brisbane has plenty of drinking fountains.

September is slightly cooler and drier, with the school holidays bringing more families. November turns noticeably more humid and stormy, and it is the month when stinger season begins in the north. December is hot, wet and busy with summer holidays, with prices at their highest.

If you want the best balance of weather and value, October is the pick; if you want cooler nights and fewer storms, aim for September.
